us producer d’marc cantu needs little introduction in the world of acid house and techno. since the late 2000s he’s been serving us quality musical output on labels like crème organization, m>o>s recordings, nation, altered moods or spectral sound, just to name a few. as well as his solo productions, he’s also one half of 2am/fm unit, alongside tadd mullinix (jtc / dabrye).
using a selection of hardware tools and analogue machines, his rugged sound draws on house, techno, acid, electro and hip hop and features crafty studio skills, knowing sampling and lovable raw aesthetics, defining his own sound that became known as jakbeat.
his latest offering for little beat different is, well, rather different in comparison to his usual club oriented output. it’s not as focused on straightforward dancefloor bangers, (although they are present here too), but features more experimental pieces, suitable for home listening purposes. totalling almost 38 minutes in length, this project has more of an album feel to it than a 12”.

berlin based japanese industrial synth duo group a make their debut on mannequin records with a killer 3-tracks self titled ep. tommi tokyo (synth, drum machine, vocals) and sayaka botanic (violin, tapes and sampler) released 2 studio albums and 1 live album in tokyo, before to move in berlin in 2016. with their mixture of dark minimal synth, avant-noise, striking visuals and performance art, the duo still carries on the very breath of early industrial pioneers such as throbbing gristle, die form, klinik, cabaret voltaire. the ep was recorded in tommi s bedroom and later mixed together with mannequin records head alessandro adriani in his own studio in berlin. the first two tracks of the ep, t.o.p. and ketabali represents the duo personal reaction against the current economy, an up yours to capitalism, news and politics, all permeated by industrial rhytmic-noises and words with no meaning. the b2 alibi instead was inspired by an autobiography of hi-red centre(japanese avant-grade art group in the 60-70 s) written by one of the members, genpei akasegawa. tommi found the word alibi in the book and she just started singing about the group. as she never wrote lyrics for that, during their live performances they are always improvised, so changing and mutating every time.

phonica is proud to present the song for mr. lewis , a new record from austin ato! austin ato may be an unfamiliar name to most right now but you will have undoubtedly heard his music before. the man behind the mask colin bailey - has a decade of music production experience under his belt using aliases such as drums of death, frankie dreams and the slumberjack. following on from his recent 12inch on futureboogie, phonica white unveils the fantastic song for mr.lewis ep. when it comes to producing electronic music, colin proves to be a dab hand at a variety of styles. his work as austin ato updates the classic house sound utilising live instruments drums, percussion and keys alongside electronic elements. at the core of song for mr lewis is a moving speech from civil rights activist representative john lewis on gun control in the united states, a message that sadly remains just as important to this day. on the flip, the dub versions strips everything back to the drums, a raw counterpoint to the deeper original, perfect as a dj tool but a powerful bare-bones track in itself. finally, the blissful morning closes the ep in style, with colin laying keys over the top of a dubbed out drum machine and bass loop that could just keep going and going. oh yeah! artwork as always is supplied by the talented pedro carvalho de almeida.

ok. this is an anthem. you know “dance” already, right? huge pal joey jam from way back in 1990? the one that flips carl bean’s “i was born this way” into the stratosphere? yeah, that’s it! except this is that track reimagined by 2 killer producers, flipped and edited into the cosmos by the new jersey legend kerri chandler and the west coast’s onionz, probably the only producers who could touch such a stone cold classic and actually bring something to the table! originally out in 2002 these 2 edits / mixes are total weapons, you need this 12” in your bag. everything is touched, tweaked and blended in just the right way and full respect is given to the mixes. this isn’t no fly by night re-edit thing, this is heavyweights bringing us some heat and their interpretation of a track that was obviously a huge deal for them on a personal level. do not snooze on this, masterfully repressed, with the full consent of everyone involved and remastered on a solid 12” for you all.

pierre bastien is a french legend that has collaborated with artists such as robert wyatt, jac berrocal and jaki liebezeit, to name just a few. he is also very well known for his compositions based on home-made mechanical instruments, designed and constructed by bastien himself. pure diy. using these instruments he would create a heady experimental mix incorporating poetry and some far-out music, all in all very intriguing and original indeed. needless to say when the notion of pierre bastien and versatile records potentially making a project together arose, it was a total honour! throw into the mix esteemed electro-acoustic composer eddie ladoire and now we ve really got something interesting. eddie and pierre met when they appeared on the same concert bill together and they decided to collaborate further with versatile being the platform for the fruits of this particular project. the original version of phantom dance is a beautiful piece where bastien plays a trumpet into some water blended with electronic drums and mellow organs lines, creating an otherworldly, subterranean jazz vibe for the freaks. suzanne kraft, the la native / amsterdam based producer turns the original into some mechanical broken funk vibes while rotterdam s oceanic delivers 2 fresh, reimagined versions. one for for the club with a strong afro beat feel while the other one is a slower affair for the after hours. both mixes bringing something new to the table. a truly original and interesting release from some very talented people, for those with open ears and open minds!

the third release for la freund recordings comes from amsterdam resident beraber. consisting of four strong and diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by chicago house legend vincent floyd, sun ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home. after working on hiphop and downtempo electronica under different aliases, this ep sees baris akardere venturing into up-tempo territories, marking the debut of his beraber moniker. all tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the korg m1 and yamaha dx7 with analog gear like the roland juno-6 and korg ms-10. kicking things off on the a-side is title track sun ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. after a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by deep house pioneer vincent floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original. the flipside opens with ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. next up is introspect, a serious electro-tinged cut with heavy juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. rounding it up nicely, forest rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with rhodes chords and field recordings from bali.

the 7 year anniversary of dame-music continues! following the well-acclaimed various artists ep earlier this year, which included tracks from boo williams, the analogue cops and milton bradley vs bloody mary, dame-music is back and proud to present its 36th release, this time inviting two very special guests to share the record with label boss bloody mary. the melting point ep marks the fusion of three renowned producers including kink, thomas p. heckmann and bloody mary. it s no secret that these three are acid lovers, and their combination on this release shows three different takes on the acid sound. both kink and thomas p. heckmann need no introduction. bloody mary has followed their music for many years and the melting point ep marks the coming together of mary with two of her most respected acid producers, all on the one record. dame-music promises all three tracks will damage the dancefloor each in their own way, just be sure to play them loud. over the past 7 years, dame-music has shaped its identity by continuously releasing a distinct blend of techno and house music. 2018 shows no signs of slowing down, stay tuned!

the pieces were created as structured improvisations using a monophonic synth (primarily) along with a yamaha dx7 (borrowed from a friend) and possibly a guitar. recording was made on an older otari mx5050 1/2 8 track. mixing was done on a tascam m-50 console and a revox a77 1/4 machine. i recall the project happened in two bursts: i did half of it in september 85, then i finished up and edited the album together in december 85. i dont really recall making copies for anyone. i think i played it for a dozen people and that was it. just forgot about it. i remember jeff ament from pearl jam (green river back then) came by while i had it playing on my home stereo. he asked what it was and said he liked it. surprised me a little. with regard to overall aesthetic: i like the sound of machinery, but i enjoy the fragility of human error and human instinct. i like to put things into motion then climb aboard and drive. i can’t play an instrument (in the classical sense) for the life of me, so i’ve always just played things that are mostly choice rather than a convolution of style and technique. i guess you call that the brian eno school of rock.

the prolific mc, producer and musician oddisee’s new album ‘the iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground. his third release in just 12 months, ‘the iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement.
lead single “things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through. says oddisee, “we all go through the trials & tribulations of life. why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? if only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn’t be so serious.”

we are proud to present sare s fourth album softmachine. it is a ten track synthesizer epic which takes us through multiple musical flavors of electronica, italo, dancefloor, disco and smooth soul pop. all threads are neatly bound up and unified by the common principles of smooth electronics, solid melody and slick song-writing. the album opens with the intro track and scene setter, dreamachine. it is a dystopian synth algorithm which is one part aural mindscape, one part electronic opus and one part sci-fi soundtrack. a perfect scene setter. everybody freak out bursts open the flood gates with a tide of funky swing, brash disco swagger and catchy lead lines. softmachine shows sare s finely honed song writing prowess with its lazy grooves, 80s sparkling synths and meandering robotized main vocal line. next the dancefloor calls with a peak-time disco vocal groover like you wanna do. it features a vocal from vaarka delivering a fine performance. multi-layered guitars, perky bass guitar and a pulsing groove power this track along. here comes that sound carries on the dancefloor vocal vein with its 4-4 beats, driving bass and sweet strings sitting perfectly alongside a multi vocalled chorused vocal from barbara grabar, kristina strasek and vanja dizdarevic. on the flipside things open with riot, sawtoothy synth waves and darting keyboard lines lead the way in this sci-fi sound track with a core of antagonism at its core. science of the beat follows with its stabby synth bass, rolling stabs and vocodered main lines. music and lies layers in sweet synth pads, melancholy meanderings and just a touch of forlorn sadness into its melodies. to round things off no chance to dance digs deep into the chic vibes with its percussive chop-guitar, on-the-beat bass guitar and swinging hand-clap disco beats. the album closes with the painfully optimistic perpetual rise, a metropolis meets vangelis like analog synthesizer masterclass

john morales geht dahin, wo noch kein dj war. das universalgenie aus der bronx, das in diesem sommer resident dj bei defecteds glitterbox-event auf ibiza war und aktuell in londons angesagtem bussey building auflegt, veröffentlicht ein abendfüllendes programm. er präsentiert unveröffentlichte mixe mit klassikern von weltstarts wie donna summer, barry white, diana ross, level 42, cher, teddy pendergrass, eddie kendricks und vielen anderen. satte vier cds oder zwei separat erhältliche doppel-lps ist diese einmalige zusammenstellung lang. john morales legt seit mehr als drei jahrzehnten auf und hat in dieser zeit über 800 remixe produziert. der vierte teil seiner -m+m mixes- ist zweifelsohne sein bislang ehrgeizigstes projekt. 32 stücke hat er seiner komplexen und unverkennbaren behandlung unterzogen und sie so noch einmal neu erfunden. dafür bekam er, was kaum einem dj gelang: man gewährte ihm zugang zu den original-mehrspuraufnahmen aus den archiven. wenn boiler room ihn als einen -der besten produzenten und arrangeure von disco-musik- beschreibt, ist das eher noch untertrieben. keiner mixt wie john morales.

forriner is lee forster and oli worriner.
i made music together with lee for years (alongside mick rolfe) as last waltz. he also worked as lizards with james hadfield (james released solo for me me me 02), oli worriner, is a talented young northerner who’s already making a great name for his solo output, both under his own name and his traela alias, as well his label “tunnyl recordings”.
i’m really flattered that they’ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they’ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i’ve avidly bought everything he’s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he’s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don’t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.
so yeah, links within links, and keeping it northeastern again i guess.

is it balearic? started the uber sublabel up a few years ago, but 2017 has undoubtedly been the strongest year so far for the imprint. following excellent stints from serene, wawawiwas and bonnie & klein, max manetti makes a debut appearance with a self-titled ep loaded with just the kind of slick, instrument-led island grooves we ve come to expect from the uber stamp. from the dense tropical trip of -jungle prayer- to the laconic guitar licks of -dub macumba-, the cyclical mysticism of -changuinola- on to -garrison- with its considered piano chops and stiff breaks, this is an ep of proficient musicianship and eclectic funk for all manner of situations.
